Okay, on to boots!
Last October, I wrote about the three most common boot issues I see, and the characteristics that make a boot especially functional and versatile.
Today’s newsletter is an extension of the concepts in that original piece, so please read it first:
Every year, around this time, I hear some variation of the following from many of my personal styling clients:
“I need boots! I want to wear them casually, but also dress them up for work and going out. It would be great if I could wear them with my slim jeans, wide trousers, and also with skirts and dresses. I’ll be walking to the subway with them, so they need to be comfortable and walkable, and ideally can withstand some snow and rain, while also being warm. At the same time, I want them to be sexy and have at least a bit of a heel. Oh, and fashion forward, too. Is this too much to ask?”

Well, since you asked, yes and no!
Why I say YES: In the OG newsletter, I wrote about the boot shape I confidently recommend to clients because it addresses the issues which repeatedly arise when trying to put together a boot outfit. As a result, it tends to work when others don’t.
Why I say NO: Does this boot go with every outfit you’ll want to wear? No, because something’s gotta give!1 But, on the whole, this boot checks most boxes, most of the time.
So what’s new for this 2024 Edition?
In today’s newsletter, not only have I sourced 30 of my favourite functional and versatile boots (FVBs) of the season, I’ve also noticed that the category has broadened to include a new, even more FVB shape.
Recall the four characteristics of an FVB (and why they’re relevant):
