Your "Five Questions I Ask Myself" has already saved me from making mistakes several times since you posted it! I've returned some items that were right on trend but just didn't feel like me. In this post, I love how your Cecilie Bahnsen skirt, a pretty daring choice, becomes so wearable and so YOU, with either the ski sweater and the moto jacket. Gorgeous! It inspires me to wear the more "daring" items I own in new ways. ❤
Comforting to know that even the experts make mistakes - will be kinder to myself 🙂. I do feel like we’re getting better at taking a breath and being a bit more thoughtful and selective but sometimes that reptilian brain still kicks in!
curious as to how folks cope with loving something at first, and then catching a glimpse in another mirror, or in a photo, and suddenly hating what you see. this may sound somewhat dysmorphic, but sometimes a bad image is all i need to never wear an item i thought i loved again.
I think it is all about how something looks on you. It's not dysmorphic, in my opinion. Sometimes when trying on clothes in a shop there is an emotion that we don't feel anymore once we try something again at home. That's why shopping is a very emotional activity.
Yes! And this is a major reason why I need to be able to return an item. The number of times I've come home with an item, all excited, only to utter a short while later "It's really not that great and what the heck was I thinking?"
Your article resonates so much with me and my current fatigue of buying anything new! When in doubt, stepping away from purchasing an item helps me realize I don’t love majority of the things I intend to buy. I also find that having moved from milder BC to ON drastically changed my outerwear selection because relatively light long coats don’t get a lot of wear in Ontario winter.
Thank you, Irene, for your honesty and openness about your shopping mistakes. I’m guilty myself of all the examples you mention but would like to specifically comment on the following: “The coat is an unlined, fall weight, wool coat. ... the arm holes and sleeves are too narrow.”
Living in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it rains a lot, it’s often very windy and most people bike, I wonder why this type of unlined coat is even available here. Sometimes, it’s in fact impossible to find a cool, not tight in the arm holes, oversized and well cut coat WITH the lining. I shake my head at this with disguise.

Also your vintage Lanvin top is incredible and so versatile. A wardrobe hero. :)

Our reptilian brain serves us well still in many aspect of our lives but it hasn’t evolved to deal with the marketing bombardment of the recent past 🙃

This took me many seasons to figure out! Im only 43 🤣
So true! You'll be lucky if you get two days wear out of those thin wool coats.
Thanks for the timely reminders. This is extremely helpful!
You're welcome, Sarah!
Oh I have so many mistakes in my closer…. I love hearing aBout yours!!! Xo
You are not alone, Kara 🤣.

So thank you for pointing this out as well.
